Yaki onigiri are delicious, crispy grilled Japanese rice balls brushed with miso and soy sauce and fried in butter. With just a few typical Japanese pantry items, you can whip up this tasty snack in no time! They're perfect for bentos too!

INGREDIENTS

Mix Rice

Mix sesame seeds into the cooked rice until evenly distributed.

STEP 1

Shape

Shape into rounded triangles using your preferred method. If shaping by hand, wet your palms to prevent sticking.

STEP 2

Dry

Place the shaped rice balls on a plate and leave to dry for 10 minutes, flipping half way to ensure they're dry on both sides.

STEP 3

Make Sauce

Mix the soy sauce, mirin, miso paste, sesame oil and grated garlic in a bowl until smooth.

STEP 4

Brush with Sauce

Brush the top of the rice balls with with the sauce and brush the edges with plain soy sauce.

STEP 5

Fry

Heat a pan on medium and melt butter. Place the rice balls sauce side down, then brush sauce on the other side. Fry for 30 seconds to 1 minute on each side.

STEP 6

Serve

Serve hot and enjoy!
