Hi, it’s Yuto (@sudachi.recipe) again.
Katsu Curry Rice “King of Japanese Curry?”
If there could be a king of Japanese curry rice, then that king would surely be… Katsu Curry!
Well, Katsu + Curry rice…What can I say? Two Japanese favourites in one go! In fact, this dish has become popular all over the world.
I mean the history of Katsu Curry itself is very interesting too. It’s said that this dish goes back to 1948, at a restaurant in Tokyo, Ginza.
There was a regular customer, a professional baseball player, who said “Katsu and Curry are my favourites, but I don’t want to order them separately.”
Then the restaurant said “Okay, we’ll put them together” and that’s how Katsu Curry was born apparently.
Even the history tells us how it’s the best right?
And of course, the calorie count is…extremely high…but that makes it extra special…fit for a king!

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Japanese curry taste like?
Compared to Indian curry, I would say Japanese curry is less spicy but thicker and sweeter.
And you can usually feel a bit of dashi flavour.
How do you make Japanese curry thicker?
You can add 1 tbsp of water and flour mix slurry but I personally don’t recommend to do that.
Even if it’s thin, as you simmer, it will be thicker and definitely thicker and richer next day, I think patience is mostly needed here.
Is Japanese curry spicy?
It depends on what kind of roux cubes you use. In Japan there are usually 3 types.
The sweet one is kid friendly so it’s actually quite sweet and not spicy at all, on the other hand, hot one is actually quite hot.
What is Japanese curry called?
It’s either カレーライス (Curry rice) or カレー (Curry)
Which Japanese curry is the best?
It definitely depends on your preference, but I personally like:
- Java curry (ジャワカレー, Hot)
- Golden curry (ゴールデンカレー, Spicy)
- Vermont curry (バーモントカレー, Sweet)
And I usually get these three above and mix in one pot.
What is katsu curry made of?
It’s usually made of Japanese style curry and Tonkatsu.
What does katsu curry mean?
It means Japanese style curry topped with Tonkatsu. Katsu bit is short for Tonkatsu (Or occasionally some other katsu such as chicken katsu.)
Is Japanese curry bad for you?
There’s no doubt that it’s a very high calorie dish. You’ve gotta treat yourself sometimes!Print
